A downloadable game for Windows

Core Mechanic:

This prototype is a top-down space shooter built to recapture the skill expression and mechanical depth of the unlocked charge shot system from Star Fox 64. In the original game, charge shots typically require a lock-on before firing. However, skilled players could bypass this by holding both the bank left and bank right inputs while charging — allowing them to fire a “dumb” (non-tracking) charge shot freely.

This mechanic added a layer of mastery. By manually aiming and timing these unguided shots, players could optimize their score by intentionally "missing" the target and landing the splash damage bonus on targets that otherwise wouldn't have granted it. It rewarded precision, timing, and spatial awareness.

I hope that this prototype can convey the vision that was intended. Please enjoy!

Prototype Features:

  • 1 level, completed upon eliminating all enemies
  • Full SFX, featuring star fox 64
  • graded score, inviting the player to replay and  beat the challenge 
  • master volume slider and toggle mode for unlocking charge shot in pause menu

Controls:

  • WASD -> move
  • [J]-> fire
  • HOLD [J] -> homing charge shot
  • [U] -> fire indefinitely
  • [SPACE] -> roll (consumes energy)
  • HOLD [SHIFT] -> unlock homing charge shot
  • [ESC] -> Pause game + Settings

Notes from the Dev

  • Stutters may occur at first appearance of shaders, but will smoothen out afterwards. 
  • Moving while releasing the dumb fire shot will affect its trajectory. This includes rolling. Try different combinations of movement options to fire at various directions and distances. 
  • Read the tips displayed at the mission complete screen for more.

Install instructions

To play, extract the .zip and launch /Prototype Game.exe. Make sure extract all files into the same folder.
